week 17 God is Good All the Time

Wendel's baptism
God is Good All the Time!

This week was chalk full of highs and lows, trials and tribulations. We had the baptisms of Renan and Wendel this week. Wendel was and is still a bit shy, but he said he was glad he made this decision. Yayy! We also had a few faltering investigators, and some who gave up due to fear and peer pressure. We do have one new investigator who talked to the missionaries a while back, an Elder Camargo from Rio Grande do Sul and an Elder Lambert, if I´m not mistaken. Anyway, she reads The Book of Mormon
every night and believes that Joseph Smith was a prophet, yet never got baptized, so we´re trying to see if she wants to make that next step now and be active in the church
or not. She is a senior citizen, and is hilarious. She loves the missionaries, she said to me, you know, the people who are rude to you guys and don´t receive you deserve the eternal fire of Hell, alright, continue my child. She, like many a Pernambucano,
likes to go out on tangents, she began talking about who the United States is a country filled with crazy, sinful youth, but then you have a few chosen ones, like this angel here, who escape from the fires of sin. She also went on to ask me about why we observe the Sabbath on Sunday, interrogated me, and then at the end said, that´s alright my child,
I too believe the Sabbath is now on Sunday. I think she was testing me, but I´m still not sure haha. She also asked me about Joseph Smith was persecuted and then went on to say, ´ta vendo?, how the servants of the Lord are treated by this world, etc. Anyway, we´re hoping she and others will progress.

Jessina, the investigator that´s older, also said to me that English is beautiful, and asked what I thought of Portuguese. I said I thought it pretty, to which she was all, Huh, really? It´s  the ugliest thing in the world haha

Cleyton and Glaucione came to church this week! Yayyy!! They both have really strong testimonies so it´s nice to see them returning. Raphael, a youth that was inactive for awhile has been coming back to church and starting to read the scriptures more faithfully, so that was nice to see.

Unfortunately, the Adversary has been working hard here in order to stop
the work, a few investigators homes had totally different environments this week when we entered their homes and we´re hoping we can continue to accompany them and help them continue on the path. One of our investigators that gave up that seemed interested in the beginning, when we asked him if he had read and prayed, replied no, combined with a bunch of other words to divert attention from that. However, Elder Russi bore his testimony and I told him that if he didn´t want to search, he didn´t have to, that we´re not here to convince or force anyone to do anything. That if he didn´t search the Lord won´t reveal it unto him, and then bore my testimony that The Book of Mormon is a sacred record and we left. Hopefully one day he´ll overcome his fear.

We are teaching one lady here in Jordao who´s kids are active members in the church, however she is really timid and afraid of making the next step. She said she believes that the things taught are true, especially seeing the good it´s done for her children, but when we asked why she didn´t want to make the next step, she replied, It’s difficult to explain. We´re hoping that we can help her with the adjustment, along with the help of Gabriel and Thais, her kids.
We have one investigator who was pretty great, who has tremendous interest
in The Book of Mormon and some contact with members of the ward here in
Jordao. He easily understood the principles we taught, and is very emotionally oriented and motivated by his sentiments, which should help. Hopefully he continues in the search. He also explained how he feels the Holy Ghost to us, he told us that when he prays he feels really good, and that´s the main example he gave us (which we didn´t ask for, he offered it to us). He seems pretty great, we´re hoping he progresses.

We had one person here in town who told us he wanted to learn more about the church, etc. However, when we got there, just wanted to Bible bash and to deny the veracity of The Book of Mormon, a book which he had never studied or read. Elder Russi got a bit emotional, spoke a bit, and bore his testimony, and afterwords I bore mine, but the guy there didn´t want to listen so we moved on.

On the positive side, we had two women this week that stopped us in the street and told us that they wanted their son/grandson to be missionaries one day. One is getting married and has a baptismal date, (she said in the past she was weak, but now she´s ready), and the other is inactive, but has a great desire to return and raise her daughter in the church and asked for us to send the missionaries over where she lives, in Ibura. We also found a new area that´s in our area, if that makes sense, it feels like we´re in the interior. We stumbled upon it while looking for the address of an investigator, hopefully we can do some work there!

We also taught one inactive member, who doesn´t seem to have a testimony, at least not anymore. Her name is Luana, and in a sense reminds me of a character that would be in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. We asked her if she believed, or knew about this doctrine, etc.
(She was baptized when she was 13). She replied, in that era I knew, but now I don´t remember. She was nice and very friendly, but seemed extremely sad, as if she were wearing a mask of happiness but you could sense the sadness underneath. She asked for a copy of The Book of Mormon, which we brought, and hopefully she´ll search it more, but she told us that now she doesn´t think the concepts of authority, etc. really matter, of if a church is true or not, as long as she feels good in that place. She also said to us that we would only change a small portion of the world, but that the work we do is very good. She is quite an interesting person.

We have another guy who was baptized, and years ago was the Youth President/Presidente dos Rapazes, he also asked for a copy of The Book of Mormon. We asked him if he had a testimony of it, he didn´t say yes or know, but he seems interested in knowing now. He also gave a prayer and said Heavenly Father, I believe these are messengers sent from you.

Lukas and Leonardo showed up to the English class this week! Lukas really wants to be fluent in English, he was asking for daily English practice, which I´m trying to figure out haha. Anyway, hopefully some seeds will be planted that will bring them to the Gospel,
there are so many evangelical churches here in Jordao it becomes difficult for people to take the steps necessary to enter into the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.

We also had a lesson with a youth named Jeremias, who´s house seemed like it was straight out of Louisiana, haha When I said we were there not to fight or argue with him, but to show and help him with his search, he replied, Ámen.

Demetrius, part of the family of Junior and Priscilla, is still progressing, but unfortunately the environment there seemed to be different, we´re hoping to help them continue to progress even so. We also had some pretty great almocos with the members this week, conversion stories, etc.
One sister told us that she loved the missionaries because she prayed and prayed to find a church where she could truly serve the Lord, and the missionaries showed up at her doorstep!

I am truly thankful for all the love and support from you guys! I love the gospel. Families can be eternal, the gospel is true, and The Book of Mormon is a sacred record.
Love,
Elder Talentino

week 16 - Mission Tour

Elder Vazquez and Elder Meneguzzi, served in Rio Jordao before us. Laid a lot of groundwork. Grateful for their service to the Lord.

Dear friends and family,

This week was pretty good. We are getting close to the end of this
transfer and I am getting a little nervous about finishing training and the possibility of being Senior in the next transfer. However, I know the Lord will provide a way for the things He commands. We had the opportunity to go to Recife, to Soledade this week for a mission tour to hear President and Sister Bigelow, as well as Elder Arnold, and to be trained. They heavily referenced Sister Fulcher, A Case Study, based on a Sister Missionary who served in New England. I encourage you guys to search it, and take a look at it, it has some details that are useful for both members and missionaries. It was truly interesting when Sister Bigelow was talking about missionary work, (we had a heavy analysis of Jacob, chapter 5, which I have always had a hard time understanding until this week, Sister Bigelow also said in the past she wasn´t particularly fond of it, but now she loves it haha), and it struck a chord with me when she said that when we become consecrated missionaries it means we stop hiding behind our fear, that we leave behind our pride, and do what the Lord asks of us. I still have difficulties with these things, but I am praying to have a strong desire to serve. She also said that when we are discouraged, and when we are in good conditions, etc., we need to get on our knees every day and thank the Lord for another opportunity to serve Him. When we were leaving Elder Arnold shook my hand and made direct eye contact with me and said, Thank you for coming here today, you have a special spirit about you.
That was a nice experience for me.

Yesterday we gave a lot of blessings for the sick, to members and investigators. A plague seems to be going through Jordao as of late, and tons of people are getting sick. As one person recovers, a relative falls ill. I gave Sarah a blessing and she loved it. It was a special experience. She is truly progressing and should be baptized soon. She told me at work that they offered her coffee, and she replied [Eu recusei!!, I rejected it! haha She also said people at work asked where she was going to church, and she replied The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or the Mormon church, they replied, What you're going to that church? She replied [Yes!!![. then they said things like, you have to get out of there, etc. She paid them no heed. We also saw her waiting at the bus stop here in town, and it was interesting to see the glow, or light about her that has augmented as she has spiritually progressed. She also offered me a whole tub of ice cream, haha Anyway, she and her younger brother are progressing and seem to have a strong grasp and testimony of The Restoration and The Book of Mormon.

We are teaching one family that is truly elect. We are hoping that they progress in the gospel, but at the same time the Adversary seems to be trying hard for them not to progress. When we taught the lesson the Spirit was extremely strong. The parents told
us their kids were arguing over who would get to say the opening and closing prayer. Junior, the dad, said he could discuss it with the Elders and take it from there, haha. Junior  also made a Lime torte and pigs in a blanket for us, as did no other investigator ever in Jordao haha. I was astounded by the generosity, humility, and sincerity of their family. Junior said he was impressed by the way we presented, a prova[, a form of proof, as in, The Book of Mormon, that he hadn´t seen with other religions. They also asked why I came with Elder Gimenez one day to that area instead of Elder Russi, and we explained missionary transfers, etc.  Priscilla, the mom, seemed a bit unsettled at the thought that one of us would leave (part of the reason we want to avoid conversion to missionaries), and said something very interesting. She said that she felt as if Elder Russi and I were chosen to speak to her family. We had a pretty good lesson about the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Spirit was very strong, when their girl gave the closing prayer I had some tears, not gonna lie.

It was interesting too because, Eduardo, an investigator that I hope will progress but actually is reading The Book of Mormon, asked me, and Junior asked me, Can I ask you a question?, Me thinking it´s going to be something obnoxious about the church or missionary life, but they just asked, Where are you from? haha We were thinking Germany, or America, but we weren't quite sure. Most people just straight up call me Germany, so it was interesting to see that dichotomy haha. When I was with Eduardo, and I replied, Ohio, one guy next to him got all surprised, and said Israel? haha No, not exactly. Junior and his family said they were asking who would have the courage to ask the Elders where they were from. Junior accepted the baptismal invitation, or at least the invitation to search to find out if this really is true. Priscilla was hesitant and straight up told us she already has her religion, but didn´t exactly deny the invitation. Demetrius, their son is incredible! He has some handicaps but has a spirit about him that is so strong and good, and he is reading The Book of Mormon every day and is truly a light in the family. I said his name with an American accent (much easier for me than the Portuguese way to pronounce it (, and he asked me when we were leaving, How do you say my name in English? Not sure why, but it was really a positive moment. Priscilla also said she pays more attention when I speak due to my accent, to make sure she understands everything, which is extremely refreshing. They were planning to go to church on Sunday but a lot of their family fell very ill, so we passed by and gave them a blessing. We were strongly advised to do so. We´re praying every day for them and hope that they can find the fullness of the Gospel.

Also, when we were walking, going to visit a less active member, a teenager jogger slowed down and came up to me, and asked if I were from England, I replied no, I´m from America, etc. His name is Lukas, and is part of the Assembleia, but is in love with English. He really wanted to have a conversation with me in English and was able to speak somewhat fluidly in a basic conversation, however, he could not get the idea that I was from England out of his head. He kept on saying things like, oh, I want to go to your land one day, England seems so cool. etc. When we were leaving he said, [English, I love you!!!, haha Truly the first true, dedicated Anglophile I´ve seen so far in the mission haha He said he would come to the English class that Erin and I are giving, hopefully he shows up, he gave us his number and said he would come with the friend he was with. Hopefully we can teach him but teaching people from the Assembleia is a bit difficult. However, if he has a desire the Lord will provide a way.

I also did a division with Elder Gimenez this week. It definitely felt like a job evaluation, haha. However, it went pretty well, I felt like if I were graded I would have gotten a B.
I was a bit stressed but Elder Russi prepared me sufficiently to do what we needed to do that day. A while back we also had a contact in the street who is from Pernambuco, but is living in Alagoas for work for two years, (he said, a bit like your guys’ mission haha( he said he didn´t believe in the after life, etc. But knew he needed
to change his philosophy of being in the world (eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die). It was interesting, he said he had come across missionaries various times, has friends in the church, etc. and that he didn’t really believe in the spirit world. However, it seems as if someone in the spirit world is really pulling for him. When we were leaving, he looked at me and said ´I love America!!´haha

We also had one teenage contact last night, a gallego!, in the street from the interior of Paraiba, here for travels. He said where he lives they don´t have missionaries, we believed him, but hopefully they open up interior missions there soon. He was very nice and seemed elect. He said he likes to read and that he would read and ponder the material we gave him. When we were leaving he said ´Boa viagem* Have a nice trip!*, and then was all, oh wait, I´m the only one here traveling haha

Love Elder Talentino
